Enyzmes

COMMON ENZYME DISORDER: Lactose intolerance is a condition caused by a lack of an enzyme called lactase, which, in turn, causes the body to be unable to digest lactose, a sugar found in milk products.

I. Enzymes control many vital functions including:
  • Breaking down food for energy
  • Increasing the reaction rate of biochemical processes. (called catalysts)

II. Different enzymes operate under:

  • Certain temperature ranges
  • Certain pH ranges
  • Certain enzyme specificity
  • ENZYMES STOP WORKING WHEN CONDITIONS ARE NOT RIGHT

III. What are some examples of enzymes?
  • Saliva contains enzymes to start the chemical digestion process.
  • Liver releases bile to break down lipids.
  • Pancreas releases pancreatic juices

Think of it this way: Enzymes are the "labor force" that builds your body just like construction workers are the labor force that builds your house.
